Communities in Schools of Renton (CISR)’s mission is to champion the connection of community resources with schools to help young people learn, stay in school and prepare for life. CISR helps children be successful by addressing barriers that prevent them from coming to school ready to learn. CISR supports school success by giving families needed support through the Family Liaison Program while supporting the child with a caring adult through the Mentor Program.

Explorations in Math (EIM) helps elementary students succeed in math by creating an engaging math culture in each school where students, teachers and parents work together to help all students succeed in math. EIM’s programs encourage students to explore, question and experience math by using games, hands-on activities, group projects and technology to further establish math skills and concepts.

Metrocenter YMCA is expanding their successful Street Soldiers Program to serve at-risk middle school students. Seattle Street Soldiers is a 16-week violence prevention, academic preparation and peer education program where students learn to speak about their own experiences with violence, life outside of school and often juvenile detention. The goal of the program, based on the nationally known Street Soldiers program, is to increase the school engagement and graduate rates of at-risk students.

Seattle MESA (Mathematics, Engineering & Science Achievement) provides enrichment opportunities in mathematics, engineering and science in grades K-12 using exemplary materials and instructional approaches. Programs include intensive math and science classes, after-school and summer programs, student participation in conferences and competitions, internships with local businesses and research centers, mentors, teacher professional development and curriculum development.
2007 Grant: $51,000
Cumulative Grant: $268,932 over five years
