How To Apply
#1 Check Your Eligibility
Is your organization:
- A registered 501(c)3?
- Clear of our funding restrictions?
- Located in King County, Washington?
- Focused on the environment, early childhood development, K-12 education, or out-of-school time?
#2 Check the Deadline
SVP typically has two grant cycles per year. Each cycle is focused on one of the issue areas listed above. Deadlines for our 2011-2012 grant cycles have past. However, the details are as follows:
- Early Childhood Development: Letters of inquiry were due on December 2, 2011
- Environment: Letters of inquiry were due on February 3, 2012.
- Out of School Time: Letters of inquiry were due on February 29, 2012
Grants in K-12 education and the environment will be given in 2013, and will have similar deadlines.
#3 Submit a Letter of Inquiry
Nonprofits are invited to submit letters of inquiry (LOI) during each grant cycle. Letters of inquiry are evaluated by our grant committee, using these criteria, which are also outlined in the guidelines below.

At the beginning of each grant cycle, we hold "Meet SVP" sessions for prospective grantees. These sessions cover our capacity building model and what we look for when organizations apply. You can download the presentation handouts here. Please check our Upcoming Events section to see if there is a session coming up.
#4 Submit a Full Proposal
SVP’s grant committee reviews the letters of inquiry, selects 5-6 organizations, and invites them to submit a full proposal. Proposals are evaluated using similar criteria as outlined for the LOI.
#5 Host a Site Visit
Members of SVP’s grant committee will visit your organization. This allows them to see your work in action, get to know your staff and board, and to ask questions they might have. It also gives you a chance to ask questions of SVP.
#6 Receive a Grant
SVP’s grant committees select 2-4 Investees each year. Grants are distributed each June.
