Before moving to the Seattle region, David and his wife lived in Washington, DC and pursued his passion to work on global climate change. His interest in energy conservation and renewable energy led him to the Green Building Institute, a leading green education non-profit in the Mid-Atlantic region where he served on its Board of Directors before becoming its Executive Director.

Lucas and Yemaya met in 1998 on a NOLS sea kayaking and mountaineering semester in Patagonia, Chile. Their love of the outdoors is one of the many reasons they live in the great Northwest, where Yemaya was raised, and where together they are raising their daughter, Gabriella.
