SVP Begins 2008 With 40 New Partners
During the last six months, more than 40 new Partners joined SVP Seattle.
We continue to grow and the numbers tell the story best. Please take a moment to learn more about the new members of our SVP Community. Together they bring a rich blend of experience, cultures, professions, education and a spirit of adventure. Their bios are linked on the left. And, while this may seem like a lot of new people joining SVP, please keep in mind that if we plan to accomplish our mission during the next decade, we need to grow our partner base by several hundred new members! If you know smart, talented, passionate, caring, folks who share our vision for the future and would be a great fit for our SVP Partnership, we encourage you to reach out --- spread the word, bring them to our SVP Community. Early Alert: More Partners and more bios coming in April Issue 2008! Read all bios….
Welcome New Partners!

If You Believe in the SVP Mission and Vision for the Future…
In November, we celebrated our 10th Anniversary and presented you with our SVP Seattle 2007-2012 Strategic Plan.
You know that our SVP future vision aspires to create significant, systemic change in our community during the next decade. We believe that SVP will become the highest impact way for individuals to effect positive social change in Puget Sound and beyond. In order to achieve this dream, SVP is seeking to raise $1.2 million in incremental funds (in addition to annual contributions) over the next five years.
Your SVP Board and about 20 Partners are leading a special effort to create an additional investment in SVP’s future. Board members and Molly and Mike Hanlon committed the first $230,000. Then a group of 20 partners stepped forward to invest another $570,000. Which means we are 2/3 of the way to our goal! If anyone would like to know more about this investment in SVP’s 5-year Vision, please let Paul Shoemaker know. As always, there is absolutely no obligation to join us in this effort. We deeply appreciate all you have done for SVP in the past and will do in the future.

SVP & APC Unplugged: Learn More
What is Advocacy? For nonprofits, “Policy Advocacy is identifying, analyzing and solving public problems.”
The SVP APC committee’s mission is building public will about the importance of upstream investments. There are a broad range of activities that non-profits can undertake to impact social problems, ranging from mining a knowledge base to reaching out to peer constituencies to sharing data to educating voters and candidates about policy issues, to lobbying public officials. The intent is to focus on activities that educate the public about the issue areas and to avoid outright political endorsements.
To put it simply, it means “speak up,” relates Nancy Amidei one of two panelists at the first session of the SVP Advocacy Training Sessions. Amidei and co-panelist Paul Ahren urged SVP partners to not only speak up for themselves, but also urged SVP to encourage, support, and even train our Investees to be advocates. Other topics covered at the session included what advocacy is and is not, what the rules for lobbying are, how the legislative process in Washington State works, and five ways for all of us to be involved. Metrocenter YMCA/Street Soldiers: A Success Story
In a recent interview, YMCA Executive Director, Jennifer Parker, expands the conversation about funder support by asking: “What if the funder gave you not just money, but access to talented consultants to help you with board development, outcome measures, marketing plans and technology assessment? That’s what happened when Social Venture Partners Seattle (SVP) chose to invest in the YMCA of Greater Seattle Metrocenter branch and the Street Soldiers program. Street Soldiers is an innovative sixteen-week violence prevention, academic preparation, and peer education program that…Read more…

SVP Board Seeks New Members
SVP Seattle’s Board (www.svpseattle.org/about/our-team) is ready to bring on two or three new Board members this Fall.
That means we are looking for candidates now—both people we will reach out to and people that might express interest. If you would like to know more about becoming a candidate for the SVP Board, please let one of us know. We can tell you more about the commitment, the Board’s role, our sub-committees, etc. We expect to have more candidates than slots which is a great “problem” to have! Thank you.
